Gary Ross talks to BBC 5 Live about buttock augmentation

The pros and cons of undergoing buttock augmentation

This week Mr Gary Ross featured on BBC 5 Live discussing buttock augmentation.

The interview, recorded live on the popular breakfast show, highlighted the pros and cons of undergoing procedures, including the Brazilian Bumlift.

The topic hit headlines again recently with reports of a US doctor fraudulently undertaking ‘bum lift’ procedures. Known as Dr Bum Bum, the disgraced expert is currently being taken to court for treating patients irresponsibly. The court case continues in America.

Why choose buttock augmentation?

The procedure comes in several forms, but the goal is to change the shape or size of the buttocks. This is usually involves one or more augmentation or enhancement methods.

The subject of buttock augmentation continues to be a contentious one. While there are many patients who benefit physically and mentally from undergoing this type of cosmetic surgery, there are many points to consider prior to the procedure.

You can find out more about this type of body contouring surgery, including suitability, via the treatment pages. A full consultation is needed before any treatment can take place.

Mr Ross on Radio 5 Live

Discussing the cosmetic surgery phenomenon with presenter Nicky Campbell Mr Ross explained why this type of procedure continues to be popular.

“Social media and the ‘Kardashian effect’ are definitely part of the reason for buttock augmentation’s continuing popularity. It’s most popular with women who want to enhance the shape of the buttocks.”

The interview included discussion on body dysmophia, as well as the importance of undergoing the procedure safely. Mr Ross explained the pros and cons of the procedure, and why seeking expert advice is paramount to the long term health and satisfaction of patients.

“We use the buttocks every day, so it’s important this type of surgery is performed with care,” Gary concluded.

Buttock augmentation options

There are different techniques when it comes to changing the appearance of the buttocks. Some patients want a bigger bottom, whereas others want to lift the buttocks. Depending on what you wish to achieve the technique used may vary.

Fat transfer procedures, such as those using Body-jet, take fat from one area of the body and replace it in the buttocks to improve shape or volume. Liposuction, on the other hand simply removes fat from the buttocks.

Some patients choose to have buttock implants, although this is less common in the UK now with the rise of fat transfer and less aggressive methods.

The key to undergoing safer cosmetic surgery

Expert tips to undergoing safer cosmetic surgery

We are currently asked by patients for our top tips when looking to undergo safer cosmetic surgery. Every patient is different, of course, but there is some simple advice to follow if you’re considering aesthetic surgical procedures.
Mr Ross says the key successful but safer cosmetic surgery results lies in the honest relationship between patient and surgeon, and doing thorough research.

Why choose cosmetic surgery?

Some patients are told they need to have surgery, for reasons such as disfigurement, trauma or cancer and tumours; other people choose to have cosmetic surgery procedures like facelift surgery to improve their self-esteem.
The decision should only be made for you, and not for the benefit of anyone else. It’s an emotional decision as well as a physical one, and this needs to be balanced during consultation. If you’re not deemed suitable for fit for surgery Mr Ross will decline to treat you.

Who you choose to trust as your plastic surgeon is of utmost importance. Mr Ross aims to provide patients who request or want to have cosmetic surgery to have the best possible advice from a specialist in their field of care.

Choosing safer cosmetic surgery

The Royal Collage of Surgeon’s Professional Standards for Cosmetic Surgery are intended to improve patient safety and standards in the industry. They stipulate that only surgeons with the appropriate training and experience should undertake cosmetic surgery, as well as the ethics and behaviour expected of them.

Any surgeons found to be breaking the guidelines risk being struck off. With that in mind, Mr Ross offers his top tips when choosing to undergo safer cosmetic surgery to the face or body:

1. Have a clear idea in your mind what you are concerned about and what you would like to be improved by cosmetic surgery

2. Find a surgeon who listens to your concerns and explains clearly what a realistic outcome from cosmetic surgery might be

3. Meet your surgeon at least 2 weeks before your operation, and ideally meet them on a second occasion before surgery. This gives you time to fully consider and understand your operation

4. Make sure your surgical team provides clear written or on-line information about your procedure and what to expect in the recovery process

5. Ask lots of questions until you are happy you completely understand the benefits and risks of your chosen cosmetic surgery procedure

6. Find a plastic surgeon that is highly qualified and trained in your procedure, and that can explain their own results of surgery to you including complication rates.

7. Make sure that surgeon is someone you feel you can trust

8. Make sure you understand what to do afterwards in case something goes wrong, and that your plastic surgeon has given you a plan of aftercare

9. Be wary of ‘promotions’ or financial incentives to pay for cosmetic surgery. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

10. Ensure you have been given a written plan for the cost of cosmetic surgery including hospital fees, and any costs associated with complications or revision procedures

How to Prepare for Eyebrow Lift Surgery

Make sure you’re ready for eyebrow lift surgery

An increasingly popular facial rejuvenation procedure is eyebrow lift surgery. Otherwise known as a brow lift, this procedure is designed to rejuvenate the area above the eyes.

As you age you may find that your brow has become droopy, resulting in a ‘moody’ looking expression left constantly on the face. A brow lift can address this issue and leave you with a youthful looking upper eye/brow area.

Unlike eyelid rejuvenation procedures such as upper blepharoplasty, the purpose of eyebrow lift surgery is to lift the brows. In turn, this gives a more youthful appearance to the upper face.

Why choose brow lift surgery?

Patients may choose to undergo eyebrow lift surgery as an anti ageing facial rejuvenation treatment. This procedure can help to open up the eye area and upper face, giving a softer and ‘happier’ appearance.

It is also sought by patients with naturally sagging or low brows. For that reason, the average age of patients undergoing a brow lift varies. This is a surgical procedure and, therefore, comes with the same risks as any invasive procedure.

What happens during this procedure?

The ‘open’ brow lift is the more traditional technique, where an incision is made at ear level going along or slightly behind your natural hairline.

The skin is lifted, some of the tissue underneath is removed and the muscles are tightened before removing excess skin and closing the incision.

You can find out more about eyebrow lift surgery itself on the treatment page.

Is there a non-surgical alternative?

If you wish to try a non-surgical brow lift, there are ways of transforming the brows with injectables like dermal fillers and muscle relaxing injections. This cosmetic treatment is non-invasive.

‘Botox’ is a medical toxin that is strategically placed around the eyes, most commonly above the eyes, in order to lift the brow. A wider-eyed appearance is just one of the numerous benefits this kind of facial rejuvenation treatment can offer.

The other benefits of using Botox around the eyes can include improving droopy eyelids and lifting the eyes.

A consultation is recommended to ensure you understand the risks associated with surgery of this nature, as well as the rewards it offers, and you’ll have the chance to ask any questions you may have.

Brow lift cost

Brow lift cost differs from patient to patient. Each person will need a tailored procedure, and some require more technical work than others.

When it comes to brow lift cost, most patients agree the results make the cost worthwhile. You can find out more about eyebrow lift surgery and fees via the brow rejuvenation treatment page.

More information about eyebrow lift surgery

We welcome your questions and would be delighted to explain more about this facial rejuvenation procedure. Please email the team if you wish to ask a question, or alternatively, you can book a consultation with Mr Ross.

How Long is Breast Augmentation Recovery?

A step by step guide to breast augmentation recovery

When considering a boob job, having an understanding of breast augmentation recovery is vital. Breast enlargement surgery is an invasive procedure as will require a recuperation period.

Mr Ross performs may breast enlargement and rejuvenation procedures every year. The most popular remains breast augmentation, which is designed to make the breast bigger using implants.

Understanding the breast augmentation aftercare stages is helpful in ensuring a swift and safe recovery. Every patient is different, so it’s important to note this will not be exactly the same for every woman.

Below you will find some commonly asked questions to help you make sense of breast augmentation recovery, and how to maximise your recovery period.

If you have any other questions you can email the clinic.

What happens straight after breast augmentation surgery?

Immediately after breast augmentation surgery you’ll be taken to a recovery ward. How long you stay here depends on your surgical outcome, and how well you respond to the anaesthetic.

You will be in bandages and will not be able to drive. It’s advised you have a family member to help you leave the hospital.

Does it take a long time to recover from a breast augmentation?

This is entirely down to the patient and the surgical outcome. Initially, patients may experience some discomfort and swelling post surgery. You will not immediately be able to tell the results of breast augmentation surgery due to bruising and swelling.

You’ll be given breast augmentation aftercare advice upon leaving the hospital. This will include washing, sleeping and clothing guidance. If you follow the advice given by your surgeon you can expect to have a swift recovery.

Can I do anything to speed up my recovery?

Not specifically. But you can do things to aid your recovery. Following the aftercare advice is very important to avoid infections and complications post breast augmentation.

Do you have any breast augmentation aftercare advice?

Wear your post-surgery garments as instructed. Take the time to recover, and let the body heal. Ask for help from family or friends, and avoid excessive movements initially.

It’s also important to massage your scars. There’s more information on this in this recent blog post on scar massage.

When can I go back to work?

Usually within 2-4 weeks of breast augmentation surgery.

When can I exercise again?

Usually within 2-3 weeks, but it should only be light exercise like swimming.

What changes should I expect aside from physically?

Sensation usually changes following breast augmentation and the nipples may be hyper or hypo sensitive. It is uncommon to have permanent changes in sensation but can take a number of months to return back to normal.

Anti ageing treatments for the eye area

Choosing the best anti ageing treatments for the eyes

Anti ageing treatments for the eye area are a great way to looking more youthful in time for the festive period. As we approach the end of 2018 and look forward to the New Year ahead, you may be considering undergoing cosmetic treatments to rejuvenate the face, and anti ageing eye treatments are a great way to kick start 2019.

There are many non surgical anti-ageing treatments which can prove useful in reducing the appearance of fine lines around the eyes or smoothing wrinkles which may appear above or below the eye area. Some of the most popular forms of non-surgical anti ageing treatments include dermal fillers, muscle relaxing injections and chemical skin peels.

There are also surgical alternatives such as blepharoplasty procedure but these require recovery time.

Considering injectables?

As well as facial rejuvenation surgery, Mr Ross offers anti ageing treatments for the eye area. Depending on what ageing concern you are aiming to treat, you may wish to choose to undergo one or a combination of several anti-ageing treatments designed to improve the skin around the eyes.

A full consultation with a medical professional is vital before undergoing any type of non surgical cosmetic treatment, however these three anti-ageing treatments are usually universally considered appropriate (and useful more often than not) for the treatment of ageing around the eyes.

Muscle relaxing injections

Muscle relaxing injections offer a non-invasive solution to lines and wrinkles forming around the eyes. Rather than smoothing lines and wrinkles, muscle relaxing injections are designed to prevent new ageing lines and wrinkles from forming, improving the youthful appearance of the face.

This is one of the most popular forms of non surgical anti-ageing treatment in the UK today with celebrities and regular clients are like enjoying the versatility of this extremely popular skin rejuvenation treatment.

Dermal fillers

Like muscle relaxing injections dermal filler treatment is administered using an injectable solution, however facial fillers themselves are not designed to prevent lines and wrinkles from forming around the eyes, but smooth and reduce the appearance of existing ones. There are many types of dermal fillers available and which one is most suitable for your needs is determined during a consultation with the cosmetic doctor of your choice.

Chemical skin peels

Chemical peels are a well established form of nonsurgical facial rejuvenation designs to not only smooth the appearance of wrinkles but also revitalise and freshen up the skin in the upper face area. Chemical skin peels are reliable and come in three different strengths depending on the level of skin rejuvenation required: superficial, medium, and deep.

Making a decision

All of these facial rejuvenation treatments are classed as non-surgical and the anti-ageing solutions can be combined together or used as stand alone treatments. It all depends on what ageing signs above or below the eyes a patient wishes to improve.

For more information about any of the treatments listed above, or for anti-ageing surgery to improve of the signs of ageing including skin that has started to sag, or volume loss please contact the clinic and a member of the team will be happy to guide you.

Popular types of facial rejuvenation surgery

The most popular types of facial rejuvenation surgery revealed

For patients considering the facial rejuvenation surgery there are numerous factors that need to be considered. Most importantly you need to ascertain whether or not your chosen anti-ageing surgery procedure is actually the right one for you.

There are many reasons a patient may consider facial rejuvenation surgery, and every patient should be treated as an individual. Mr Ross offers a variety of anti-ageing procedures, each offering a different end result. Some of these procedures are more popular than others, and some very rarely seen to go out of style. Below you will find three of the most popular types of facial rejuvenation procedures and what specific benefits undergoing these procedures may offer.

Facelift surgery

Without doubt, one of the most sought-after forms of anti-ageing surgery in the UK is the facelift. This procedure can be performed in a variety of ways, making it suitable for many different types of patient.

There are three variations of facelift surgery that remained the most popular. These include the full facelift, the midface lift, and the lower facelift. You would need a full consultation in order to determine which variation of facelift surgery is most suitable to your needs.

You can find out more information about facelift surgery via the treatment page.

Eye rejuvenation

Eye rejuvenation procedures can include upper or lower blepharoplasty, brow lift, and eye bag removal. In some cases one or more procedure will be combined in order to give the patient the best result.

An upper eyelid rejuvenation is designed to improve the skin above the eyes whilst the lower eyelid variation is designed to improve the appearance of eye bags and sagging skin below the lash line.

This type of facial rejuvenation surgery is popular with both men and women and is often combined with procedures including facelift surgery, especially in older patients.

Neck lift surgery

For patients that are unhappy with the skin below the jawline a neck lift maybe the best facial rejuvenation procedure. It remains a popular choice for patients over the age of 50.

Unlike facelift surgery, which helps to lift the skin of the face, and neck lift is purely designed to smooth this skin of the neck and improve the appearance of the area below the chin.

Picking your facial rejuvenation surgeon

Mr Ross believes communication is key in the health professional/patient relationship, and when choosing a treatment and a practitioner.

You need to make sure your chosen medical professional understands your goals and needs. Mr Ross does not support the ‘over done’ look, nor the glamour look favoured by certain celebrities, and will turn people away seeking unrealistic and unnatural results.

“The concerning thing is, there is a part of society who want to look overdone, for whatever reason this may be, but the bottom line is that every face is different and needs to be studied before treatment.

“It is an art, not a science and some practitioners themselves need to be told when enough is enough,” Gary says.

Procedures to reduce facial ageing for men

Which procedures are men opting for to improve facial ageing?

When it comes to male cosmetic surgery, there has never been more demand. The idea that men do not seek procedures to reduce facial ageing could not be further from the truth, and as we enter 2019 this looks set to rise further.

The stigma of undergoing cosmetic surgery seem to decrease year on year, with it maintaining a steady increase in the UK. Male cosmetic surgery is something we see many enquiries about, and Mr Ross performs facial rejuvenation procedures for men mainly over 45.

Why choose to undergo cosmetic surgery?

There are various forms of anti ageing facial rejuvenation surgery. Mr Ross offers the same options to both men and women, although the procedures of course vary patient to patient.

Facial rejuvenation procedures are designed to lift, tone or smooth areas of the face and neck. The purpose of these surgical procedures is to create a more youthful appearance and boost confidence.

For men, facial rejuvenation surgery to reduce facial ageing is increasingly being sought to get ahead at work or look younger. Although in younger men we are seeing a desire for cosmetic procedures to look better on social media or boost appeal on dating apps.

What procedures help treat facial ageing?

Popular requests for 2018 have included upper blepharoplasty and brow lift surgery. In terms of the body, on the other hand, body contouring surgery including fat transfer has continued to gain popularity.

Blepharoplasty procedures are designed to rejuvenate the eye area. This can be the lower or upper lids, or both. You can find out more information about eye bag removal and eye rejuvenation surgery here.

Brow lift surgery is ideal for men looking to lift the brow line and can give a more youthful appearance to the upper face. It’s often combined with blepharoplasty procedures, as above. You can find out more about a brow lift via the treatment page.

A facelift is another popular procedure to improve an ageing face. It’s a surgical procedure that can lift sagging skin, and there are several variations of the procedure. Check out the facelift page if you’re interested in learning more about this procedure.

Non surgical options

As well as cosmetic procedures like the facelift or brow lift, Mr Ross offers non invasive alternatives. These are popular with men from 30 upwards, and while they cannot rival surgery they can be useful.

Head over to the non surgical pages if you’d like to see the available injectable options for men looking to reduce ageing signs such as wrinkles and fine lines.

What Are The Different Types of Nose Jobs Available?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is considered one of the most popular types of nose jobs available to patients. However, did you know that there are more to nose jobs than simply cosmetic changes? Although many patients wish to improve their aesthetic appearance, there are different types of nose jobs available that each provide their own intended outcome.

It’s worth noting that each individual patient is unique, so the appearance after surgery can be different but let’s look at what’s available and what each rhinoplasty surgery serves.

Different types of nose jobs available

Reduction Rhinoplasty

A reduction rhinoplasty does exactly what you expect, it aims to reduce the size of your nose. There are different ways and parts of the nose that can be reduced, whether it’s the overall nose size or concentrating on specific parts of the nose such as the tip or bridge. During the surgery, the desired results are made by removing cartilage so the desired shape can be achieved.

Post Traumatic Rhinoplasty

The structure of the nose is made up of many different parts and cartilage, therefore when injury occurs there can be many impacts that affect the delicate structure of the nose. This can cause changes to the nose such as broken bones, visible changes or even affect your overall breathing.

Bleeding is also another cause for concern as blood flow will be impacted and blood clots can cause septal hematoma. This is when the blood build up causes a collapse of the cartilage and produces a deformity in the nose.

Augmentation Rhinoplasty

In this surgery, your surgeon will aim to build up parts of your nose bone or tissue grafting. This tends to focus more on the nose or bridge areas of the nose. To perform the grafting technique, your surgeon will opt to use cartilage from the other parts of the nose such as the nasal septum.

However, if it’s discovered that you don’t have enough tissue in the area where grafting is available, there are other materials that are available to your rhinoplasty surgeon to perform the augmentation. This includes synthetic implants or autologous implants harvested from the patient’s own nose.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Another different type of nose job available is the revision rhinoplasty. This aims to repair the functionality and appearance of the nose from a previous nose job surgery. Many patients tend to have difficulty with their breathing or appear dissatisfied with their cosmetic appearance from a previous surgery.

Rhinoplasty at Gary Ross

Is there something that you’re not happy with with your nose? Perhaps you’ve gone through a trauma and require a repair to your nose? Gary Ross offers rhinoplasty for patients that are looking to make changes cosmetically or for functionality purposes. There are a range of rhinoplasty case studies available to view that show the results and experiences of previous patients that have had the surgery. 5 Common Signs Of Implant Rupture In Your Breasts

Over the years, breast implants have become increasingly durable; however, ruptured implants are still one of the biggest concerns for patients who undergo breast augmentation surgery. On average, research suggests that the chances of implant rupture rates in breast surgeries increase by 15% and 17% every 10 years.

What We Recommend As Preventative Implant Rupture Measures

To prevent the possibility of an implant rupture in our patients, we invite you to come in to our Manchester clinic for regular check-ups, or to a clinic more local to you. This ensures the implant rupture signs aren’t present, like you would do with a mammogram, for your health and safety.

10-year lifetime guarantees that come with your breast implants can also be a safety net to ensure you gain the right aftercare and have breast implant replacements in case something goes wrong.

However, it’s still important to be well aware of common signs of implant ruptures, as this can allow you to act sooner. Read further to discover the common signs of breast implant ruptures and what action to take should this happen.

How To Perform A Breast Self-Exam

While checkups with us are important, weekly or monthly self-exams are extremely important in breast health. Here are some simple ways you can check for any changes to your breast.

  • Look in the mirror for any changes in shape, size, colour and unusual asymmetry. Raise your arms and look for the same changes.
  • Look for signs of breast fluid.
  • Feel for breast lumps while lying down.
  • Feel for breast lumps while standing up.

Common Signs Of Implant Rupture

Your Implant Feels Softer Than Usual

Your implant tends to feel quite firm at the beginning stages of your surgery; therefore, after healing is done, become familiar with your implants to help detect early signs of an implant rupture. If you feel as though your implant has become softer, this gives an indication that gel from the implant has leaked, potentially from an implant rupture.

We recommend you ring the clinic as soon as possible to come in for a scan to assess the rupture and correct it.

Your Implant Becomes Stiffer

In some cases, the opposite can happen, and your implant can’t feel noticeably harder. This is a sign of capsular contracture, where the skin tissue reacts to the breast implants and causes them to form a different shape. This can also cause slight pain, which is a sign of implant rupture.

Again, we recommend booking an emergency appointment so we can assess and potentially replace the implant.

Your Breast Becomes Swollen

Another common sign of an implant rupture is when your breast becomes swollen. This occurs because the fluid from the breast implants interacts with your tissue fluid, which causes the breasts to swell and become noticeably rounded. Any change in shape and size 6+ weeks post-surgery is cause for an appointment.

If you see any noticeable signs of swelling or abnormal swelling during your recovery, then you should seek urgent advice from your trusted plastic surgeon.

Lump In Your Breasts

Any form of lump that you discover in your breasts should be considered of high importance and addressed immediately. A silicone breast implant rupture can feel like small bumps and larger lumps; you may even notice masses around the implant resembling small marbles. Getting an examination as soon as possible is imperative in these cases.

This could also be a sign of breast cancer, which should be examined by a specialist.

Pain Or Itching

If you feel any other discomfort after you’ve had your breast surgery and healed, such as pain or itching, these should also be considered an implant rupture sign. Be sure to check this with a specialist to ensure there has not been an implant rupture, or return to your clinic to notify them that you feel there are issues with your breast implants.

Gary Ross Practice

Here at Gary Ross, we make patient care our top priority. Although the majority of our patients are extremely happy with their results and rarely have issues with their breast implants after surgery, there can be times when risk and complications are involved, whether it’s a personal reaction or accident that causes the implant to rupture.

By educating you on the signs of implant ruptures and other concerns through our blog post, we can ensure that you’re safe and aware of what could happen.

We have been a safe haven for patients looking for revisions, advice and solutions for concerns regarding breast implant ruptures and beyond. Here are some case studies of breast revisions we have done in cases such as implant rupture replacements.

Reasons Why More Men Are Considering Male Nose Surgery

Contrary to popular belief, cosmetic surgery is becoming a service that’s available for both women AND men. In today’s society, it’s clear that more male patients are opting for plastic surgery to help improve their appearance. In particular, male nose surgery has seen a rise in popularity as patients look to enhance their appearance.

Popularity In Male Nose Surgery For Patients

According to Statista, the number of patients that opted for a rhinoplasty procedure in the UK in 2019 amounted to 2,432, making it one of the most popular procedures for a patient to have. There can be several reasons why a patient may opt for a male nose surgery, be it for cosmetic purposes or medical. With society seeing plastic surgery as normality nowadays, it’s no surprise that more and more men are opting to improve their appearance through the procedure.

Benefits For Men Opting For Rhinoplasty

The purpose of a male nose surgery is to amend the facial aesthetics of your nose if it has any structural issues. For those considering the surgery, there can be many benefits that it can bring including:

Symmetry To Your Face

Your nose is part of the crucial factors that provide symmetry to the appearance of your face. No patient’s appearance is the same, therefore it can be customised to your needs and wants. You can still project a masculine appearance that looks powerful, whilst correcting some deficiencies in the face.

Amend Or Remove Unwanted Facial Features

Our facial features are inherited from our parents and sometimes they can be unwanted. Some of these traits are much preferred to be altered by men as they don’t feel masculine with their appearance. A male nose surgery can make changes to features such as a bulbous tip, a bump on your bridge or even wide nostrils.

Defects In Structural Appearance

A common reason why men opt for plastic surgery on their nose is due to lasting traumas and injuries to their nose. A rhinoplasty can help to fix any defects in the nose whilst also providing an increased appearance to the nose.

Improve Breathing

Repairing a deviated septum isn’t classed as a cosmetic procedure, but it can provide increased health benefits in improving breathing. If you have trouble sleeping or regularly struggle to breathe during physical activity, repairing a deviated septum can be combined with changing the cosmetic aspect of your nose.

There are many patients in the local Manchester area that look for local cosmetic procedures to help improve their appearance, including male nose surgery. The team at Gary Ross are aware that male patients have different preferences to their female counterparts when it comes to plastic surgery. They have plenty of expertise and qualifications that can cater to your needs. Contact us today to book a consultation where we can review your needs and see what the best options are for you.
