There are many different perceptions of what defines the term ‘overweight’. The reality is however that, for many, being overweight is a condition that brings with it significant health and social problems. It is estimated that almost two-thirds of all adults in the UK are either overweight or obese and that there are more than two million adults in England with a body mass index (BMI) so high that they would qualify for bariatric (weight loss) surgery under current National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.
