Calf Augmentation Surgery
Calf augmentation surgery is a specialised technique that aims to increase the size and shape of the calf.
Patients frequently request calf augmentation for purely aesthetic or cosmetic reasons. For instance, women may desire only the medial, or inner, leg to be filled out to achieve a softer contour, whereas bodybuilders may want both the inner and outer lower legs enhanced. Calf augmentation can be performed using either calf implants or autologous fat transfer.
Nights In Hospital
It’s recommended to stay up to 2 days in the Alexandra Hospital, but this may differ depending on surgical combinations.
Recovery
Supportive garments are required to be worn for 4 to 6 weeks. Discussions and recommendations by Mr Ross will be suggested after the routine check-up.
Full Results
Recovery can take up to 8 weeks, with full results up to a year later. This can vary depending on what procedures were included.

Our Patient's Journey After Calf Augmentation
Here is one of our case studies for calf augmentations, but for our full range of case studies, head over to our calf augmentation case studies page.
Causes of Underdeveloped Calf Muscles
There are many reasons for patients having underdeveloped calf muscles. These include both congenital and acquired conditions.
Congenitally, there may be underlying causes such as skeletal malformations, neuromuscular abnormalities or central nervous system abnormalities. Acquired causes include peripheral motor neuron disease, infections involving the central nervous system, collagen-vascular diseases and physical trauma.
Due to these complexities, it is important to be examined thoroughly and to investigate any underlying causes before considering surgery.
Your Calf Augmentation Surgery Options
Surgery can either be in the form of calf augmentation with a foreign body like silicone implants or the use of your own tissue via autologous fat transfer.
The choice between these options depends heavily on the pros and cons of the techniques. This is a crucial topic that needs to be discussed during a formal consultation.
There are more risks associated with silicone implants, but they do give a more reliable and permanent increase in volume. Autologous fat transfer is a relatively safe technique, but it may need to be repeated because the transferred fat can resorb into the body over time.
Calf Augmentation Preparation
Your health is of prime importance, and any cosmetic surgery should be postponed if you are unwell for any reason. Before undergoing the procedure, you should do the following 6 weeks before surgery:
- Stop smoking, and commit to making this a long-term lifestyle change.
- Stop taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Stop taking herbal supplements.
Following your calf augmentation surgery, you will experience stiffness and soreness in your legs and should aim to be off work for at least 2 weeks.
After Calf Augmentation Surgery
You should expect soreness, bruising and swelling for up to 4 weeks after your surgery. Make sure to always follow your surgeon’s instructions to keep the area clean and dry. While most patients return to regular activities 6 weeks post-surgery, strenuous exercise should be avoided until cleared by Mr Ross. Long-term recovery involves regular checkups, continuing self-examinations once healed and monitoring for any changes in implant shape or placement.
Side Effects of Surgery
It is completely normal to experience some temporary side effects as your calves heal. Immediately following your procedure, you should expect some swelling and bruising. If you are concerned about any side effects of surgery, get in touch with Mr Ross for a discussion.
Calf Augmentation FAQs
This procedure may be right for you if you are unhappy with the size or shape of your calves, wish to increase volume or correct leg asymmetry. Other options will be discussed during your consultation to decide on your preferences. We would advise against the procedure if you feel pressured into cosmetic surgery, or if you are a smoker, have a long medical history or unrealistic expectations for the surgery.
If you do smoke, then your surgeon will discuss the benefits of giving up smoking before your calf augmentation surgery, as you are more likely to develop problems following the surgery.
After a consultation with Gary Ross, we will provide you with a quote for your calf augmentation surgery. Quotes include hospital, surgeon and anaesthetic fees. Check out the cost of procedures on our website.
Private hospitals are often more comfortable and allow patients to hand-pick their surgeon. All our procedures are performed at the Alexandra Hospital with Mr Ross. As one of the most accredited private hospitals in the UK, patients leave the experience feeling well-rested and prepared for recovery.
During your first consultation, we’ll have a careful and considerate conversation with you about the best treatment route for you. You’ll then have consultations with our oncological team to ensure your surgery is both safe and tailored to your health profile.
